Multifunctional filters are used for fine filtration of low-viscosity oils with low levels of contamination. The filter systems can be operated as either precoat filters or edge filters, and conversion between the two modes is easily achievable. This versatile design allows the filter systems to be well-adapted to various filtration tasks. The achievable filtration fineness ranges from 1 to 5 µm. When operating as an edge filter, the filter regeneration process is fully automatic, while the precoat filter version requires manual cleaning.

Multifunctional filter systems can be operated as either edge filters or precoat filters:

Edge filter with paper/plastic inserts (no filter aid required)

Precoat filter with filter aid (such as diatomaceous earth or cellulose)

Both modes are interchangeable and can be easily switched between.

Operating Principle – Precoat Filter Mode: Precoat Stage: The entire tank is filled with oil. Before filtration can commence, the filter discs need to be precoat with a filter aid.

Filtration Stage: The precoat circulation is interrupted, and the filtrate is directed into the clean oil tank. The system supply pump is then activated. The filtration fineness, depending on the filter aid used, ranges from 1 to 5 µm.

Regeneration Stage: The filter contamination is monitored, and when the preset filtration pressure is reached, the regeneration process is initiated at the machine tool. After the machining cycle is completed, the system is automatically regenerated. The operator manually removes the accumulated dirt.

Operating Principle – Edge Filter Mode: Filtration Stage: During filtration, the contaminated fluid is pumped from the dirty oil tank through the filter candles in the filter dome into the clean oil tank. The system supply pump is then activated. The filtration fineness without the use of filter aids ranges from 1 to 5 µm.

Regeneration Stage: The filter contamination is monitored, and when the preset filtration pressure is reached, the regeneration process is initiated at the machine tool. After the machining cycle is completed, the system is released to start the fully automated regeneration process by the operator. This automatic process includes filter dome cleaning, secondary cleaning, and the subsequent transition to the filtration process, all controlled by the integrated PLC. The F.E.S. edge filter system minimizes backwash losses through efficient secondary treatment of the discharged oil. Oil misting during filter dome backwashing is reduced to an absolute minimum through a multi-stage exhaust air cleaning system.


Equipment: The standard basic equipment includes a multifunctional filter as a precoat filter, complete with:

  • Tank divided into dirty oil and clean oil compartments with a separate suction chamber
  • Immersed pumps for filter and machine supply
  • Filter dome with precoat filter discs
  • Stainless steel filter dome and filter fabric
  • Complete automatic valve set with pneumatic installation


Additional Equipment for Edge Filter Mode:

  • Filter insert with edge filter candles
  • Secondary treatment for backwashed oil


Optional Accessories:

  • Control cabinet with PLC, visualization, and complete electrical installation
  • Magnetic roller for pre-separation
  • Dosage device for filter aids (only for precoat filter version)
  • Compressed air cooler or heat exchanger for maintaining a constant operating temperature
  • Oil mist extraction systems


Application: Multifunctional filters in edge filter or precoat filter mode are primarily used for individual machines with low oil contamination. The standard filter capacities range from 40 to 120 l/min depending on the specific application. Custom designs are available for larger filter capacities. The separation range is determined by the filter aid or filter candles used and ranges from 1 to 5 µm. The viscosity of the oil and the level of contamination significantly affect the filter’s service life. These systems have proven to be effective in applications such as honing, finishing, electrical discharge machining (EDM), and hard metal processing, among others.
